Trident Yorkshire Youth at Huddersfield Sailing Club

by Adrienne Benson 3 May 2005 11:41 PDT 30 April 2005

Mist, drizzle and no wind greeted the 19 entrants for Round 3 of the Trident-sponsored Yorkshire Youth Travellers’ event at Huddersfield SC on 30th April.

Bowshaw Whams is a very tricky water where tactics are far more important that boat-speed as Cheryl Wood (Laser) discovered to her cost. After making by far the best start in Race 1 she was out-manoeuvred by local Laser lads James Jagger and James Dyson to the first mark. However, no-one could make a dent in a strong lead gained by Tom Hindson (Laser) who read the wind to perfection.

While the Lasers spent the rest of the race close-covering each other, Amy Crossley (Topper) was able to sail her own race and emerged in third position on handicap. It certainly was not a day for the double-handers and Race 2 followed much the same pattern as Race 1 where Jagger emerged victorious closely followed by Hindson. Crossley again took 3rd on Handicap.

A long postponement for no wind was followed by a hurried launch but the wind swung, the start line had to be amended and the wind dropped to below the minimum set by the SIs half-way up the first beat. Race 3 was therefore abandoned.

Overall Results:

1st Tom Hindson, Laser (Welton)
2nd James Jagger, Laser (Huddersfield)
3rd Amy Crossley, Topper (Pennine)
4th James Dyson, Laser (Huddersfield)
5th Benn and Yardley, RS200 (Ripon)
6th Adam Lees, Laser Radial (Pennine)
