Riva Cup at Fraglia Vela Riva, Lake Garda

by Elena Giolai 3 Jun 2013 20:17 NZST 30 May - 1 June 2013

The Riva Cup has concluded after 3 days and 10 races. The regatta, organised by Fraglia Vela Riva, featured the Korsar and Dyas classes. The weather conditions weren't exactly the best with dull, grey days but on the last day we were treated to a few rays of sunshine and above all a good southerly wind of 16 knots.

Dyas Class (14 crews)

The Dyas class was an all German affair with the competition being dominated by Eckardt Thomas with Philip Heldmann at the bow. They had 4 wins, 3 seconds and a third (discarded), in fact they notched up a 13 point lead over the second place crew helmed by Peter Bersch who had partial wins in the second and fifth regattas. Drawing on points, the bronze went to Breitenfeldt-Herrschinger.

Korsar Class (23 crews)

There was much more of a battle for a place on the podium in the fast Korsar class with only two points separating the top two positions. Thanks to a final with two partial firsts, the German crew helmed by Axel Oberemm prevailed. This crew also won the last edition of the Riva Cup. Second place went to fellow Germans Schomaeker-Holger. 14 points further behind came third place winners Braun Dirk with Jurgen Kruck at the bow.

Korsar Results

"It's a pleasure to organise regattas for those who regard sailing as a sporting holiday and who come from abroad from countries such as Germany and Austria – commented Mauro Stanga, President of Fraglia Vela Riva – even if the weather wasn't on our side, there was plenty of wind which allowed everyone to enjoy themselves on the waters of Lake Garda, Trentino"- said Stanga during the awards ceremony.
