Womens Match Racing at London 2012 - Day 5: Brits back to winning ways

by RYA 2 Aug 2012 10:41 PDT 2 August 2012

The British Match Racing Girls got back to winning ways picking up their one and only race on day five of the Olympic Regatta at Weymouth and Portland today (Thursday 3 August).

The Poole trio of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor saw off the challenge of Sweden to head into their rest day tomorrow tied fifth overall in the round robin phase of the competition, with a 55% win ratio.

Lush admitted the team had been "disappointed" with their performance yesterday, when they slipped to two losses just a day after picking up two race wins.

But the Brits were much more pleased with their showing against Anna Kjellberg, Malin Källström and Lotta Harrysson today.

Lush said: "It was a good day today with some good racing in the sunshine. It was a nice consistent race which we were in control of for the duration, it was quite close with the big puffy conditions but we managed to stay in control the whole race and came through with the win."

Lucy said: "We have had five days competing now and it will be good to have a day off tomorrow, recharge the batteries a little and be able to focus on winning our next two races on Saturday.

Kate said: "It's been a little different this regatta, everyone has had mixed results apart from the Australians who are at the top of their game. It's still the same people and we can learn from our mistakes and we are definitely still feeling confident."

The girls are set for their last two round robin races on Saturday. The knock-out stage for the top eight boats commences next Wednesday (8 August).

Match racers are in action on more days than any other class and are not only one of the first classes to start but the last class to finish with the match racing final bringing the curtain down on the 2012 Olympic Regatta on Saturday 11 August.
