Sailors across the country are getting ready for the Topper Nationals that will be taking place at East Lothian Yacht Club next week (1-5 August).
This event is the UK National Championships for the Topper class with around 300 boats expected to take to the water. The event is aimed mainly at junior and youth sailors but adult participants are also welcome. With so much activity out on the water East Lothian looks to be a very busy place next week.
Members of the National Topper Squad, Aaron Murray, Jo Barrie and Jack Aitken will be competing at the event and worth watching as they will be hoping for top 50 finishes.
Nicholas Scott, High Performance Manager for RYA Scotland commented: “The event is a fantastic opportunity for Scotland’s best and brightest to really showcase their skills on home waters. The squad has been working really hard over the last few months training here at North Berwick and I believe at the end of the week the results will bear that out”.
Competitors and spectators can enjoy a fantastic atmosphere with most competitors bringing their friends and families along with them. The event itself is estimated to bring somewhere in the region of £300,000 of revenue to the East Lothian area which is good news for the local guest houses, restaurants and shops.
RYA Scotland will be at the event all week to offer their support and in particular will be offering coaching advice to all Scottish sailors, including non-squad sailors, to help ensure they make the most of the racing opportunity. RYA Scotland staff will also be on hand to answer any questions and give more information about the work they do.
As well as all the action out on the water RYA Scotland have linked up with Scottish Volleyball to provide some on-shore activity whilst the Nationals are taking place. The ‘Sea and Sand’ project is about bringing together like minded people to build sporting communities along our shores and develop our seaside as free, flexible and complementary playing fields. The Beach Volleyball festival will be taking place on Friday 5 August which will include activities such as taster sessions.
If you are looking to watch a top sailing event and also have a chance to try Beach Volleyball, then come along to North Berwick.
