Laser Lakeland Grand Prix at Killington Sailing Association

by Tim Luke 17 Apr 2011 13:02 PDT 9 April 2011

21 boats from 6 clubs turned out for this year’s Laser Open at Killington Lake. It was great to see familiar faces from last year’s Grand Prix series and welcome many new faces to Killington including a six strong contingent from St Mary’s Loch, several of whom drove down from Edinburgh that morning. Late arrivals allowed time for the breeze to build and for race staff to coax outboards back to life after the winter break. There was long enough for the youngsters to discuss the impact of A levels on their sailing and for the oldies to compare winter physio bills!

The breeze oscillated through 60% making start lines a challenge. Boats occasionally got onto the plane but not for long. Sun burn and dehydrated dry suit wearers were the only hazards.

Results were remarkably similar to 2010 with the local Lawson brothers dominating the event. This year David stretched out his lead in all three races with “Pete the professional” (Sail Blades) in contention. Last year’s series winner, Dan Trotter, was edged into 4th place by Gareth Balfour of KSA who was consistent with two third places and a fourth. Sharing 10 points with Dan were Tom Goden, a very welcome new face from Bassenthwaite and Tim Luke. After yet another birthday Tim can enjoy a close contest with Jonathan Nicoll in the Grand Masters.
