Setley Cup Model Yachting at Salterns Sailing Club

by Stuart Jardine, Race Officer 26 Dec 2010 10:50 PST 26 December 2010

Despite the thick ice and NFDC Car Park maintenance at Setley Pond which force a hasty move down to the Salterns at Lymington where racing was just possible, requiring three rowing dinghies to constantly clear the ice which had formed overnight on this salt pond!

After a very hard frost of around minus 7 everyone was a little alarmed to find the Salterns frozen over, only the evening before it was clear. The three rowing dinghies available were immediately set to breaking the ice which became necessary even whilst racing was on as the ice kept on reforming and the models started fouling the loose ice sheets.

The weather was fine and cold but with only a very light NW wind giving the lighter hulls with larger sail areas the advantage.

The area around the Salterns was crowded and as in previous years boats came in all shapes and designs, from classic shop-bought monohulls to multihulls fabricated out of drinks bottles. The number of entries in each Category this year was down a little from last year but the standard of design had improved quite a lot probably due to the recent weather and more time indoors. 14 Mono-hulls and 10 Multi-hulls finished the three race series more than for many years.

Three races were completed with no discards. The top two Mono-hulls in 2009 swapped places this year with “Robyn 2” sailed by Connie Stock loosing out to “Robber” sailed this year by George Dunsdon who won the Setley Cup and with third place going again to “Planet” sailed this year by Jack Chartres.

The Multi-hull class was dominated by Maya Gill “Don’t Know” winning all three races to take the Seahorse Trophy, followed by Matty Gill “Codfish” in second and taking revenge over the 3rd “Maxicat” sailed this year by Meg Flynn and Annabel Luxton.

Once again many thanks to all the helpers particularly to our stalwart on water team of Christopher Markes, Chris Baldwick, Chris Neve and Ashore Robin Markes, Ado Jardine and our scorers Jane Pitt-Pitts with Hannah Neve. Photos by Michael Derrick.
