Bug Event at Datchet Water Sailing Club

UK Bug Class Association hosts first event

Saturday 22nd May saw the first event hosted by the UK Bug Class Association. A training day was based at Datchet Water Sailing Club. 12 youth sailors attended and enjoyed sailing 10 Bugs, provided by LaserPerformance.

The weather conditions were absolutely perfect for an introduction to the Bug. 8 – 10 knots of cross shore wind and temperatures up to levels normally found in the Mediterranean!

The purpose of this first event was to bring some Bug sailors together and provide an opportunity for others to try sailing the Bug. The sailors had mixed experience, some were first time sailors and others were regular club racers. “It was great to see how the more experienced sailors helped the first-timers to get started,” commented Bug Class Co-ordinator Ian Harrison.

The morning session focused on the fundamentals of sailing; rigging, parts of the boat, sailing and turning. We also touched on the “Five Essentials”. The group eagerly took to the water sailing a simple, short course which we developed throughout the morning session into an upwind sailing exercise.

After lunch we talked about sailing downwind before setting sail for a trip around the Lake. The wind built as the afternoon went on and the sailors enjoyed some great downwind runs and reaches.

The first event of the UK Bug Class Association was enjoyed by everyone who took part and we hope to arrange some more dates throughout the summer. There was a lot of interest in the Class Association and we have already received our first membership application forms.
