Kannad Manual 406 EPIRB with GPS

by Mailspeed Marine 15 May 2009 07:08 PDT

This EPIRB is the same as used by the solo ocean rower Remy Alnet who was rescued by a supertanker when his boat capsized 400 miles off the coast of French Guiana whilst taking part in the second edition of the Bouvet Rames Guyane Ocean rowing race between Senegal and French Guiana. By activating his epirb the search and rescue authorities were able to pinpoint his position and alert vessels within the area to his cause, almost certainly saving his life in the process. You may not be an ocean rower but an epirb is a still classed as a must have piece of safety equipment by many boaters.

So how does it work?

The Kannad 406 MHz beacon features an embedded code containing your boats identification (once programmed), which enables the rescue operators on the ground to identify immediately the boat or person in need of assistance. This beacon can be spotted anywhere in the world and at any time. In addition, the 121.5 MHz aircraft frequency provides a homing frequency in the final phase of a rescue search.

The Kannad beacons with an integral GPS receiver providing a higher precision and a faster detection time than the location already supplied by the 406 MHz frequency.
