Laser Masters Inlands at Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club

by Glyn Purnell 30 Oct 2007 01:10 PDT 27-28 October 2007

The final event of the 2007 series and the Phoenix Marine Masters Inland Championships took place at Chew Valley SC over the weekend of 27/28 October, attracting an entry of 54. For the event there were two fleets, standard and radial, each with their own start but on the same course.

Saturday started off with a Force 2 southerly wind that disappeared a third of the way through the first race. The race was stopped and the fleets returned to the starting area. After a short wait the wind reappeared from the same direction at 15 to 17 knots to enable three demanding races to be sailed back to back.

The forecast for Sunday indicated strong winds. This turned out to be the case with a 23 knot wind with stronger gusts greeting the competitors. The rain did not cheer anyone up either. A half hour postponement was put up to see if the wind would moderate as forecast. This it did and the rain also abated to enable the scheduled three races to be sailed.

In the standard rigs the main battle took place between Alan Davis and Steve Cockerill with Cockerill the eventual winner on 6 points, Davis on 8 and Nick Carus in third with 15 points. While in the radial fleet David Summerville dominated finishing on 6 points from Mike Kinnear on 8 points and Glyn Purnell on 16 points. The highest placed Great Grandmaster was Rob Napier in a respectable 4th place considering the conditions.
