UK Martin 16 Nationals at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club
by Dr Tony Flinn 3 Jul 2007 11:44 PDT
30 June - 1 July 2007
The first race took place in a force 5 gusting force 6 southerly wind whipping up the length of the lake. Conditions were difficult at times with unusually high waves and regular spray. Several boats abandoned the use of spinnakers & goosewinged it on the long downward leg straight to the leeward mark. Tony & Rosi Flinn in boat 114 ‘Silver lining’ took first place while one competitor retired.
Conditions mellowed for the second race which was won by helm Chris Atkin in boat 97. Shorter windward-leeward courses were chosen for most of the races.
Sunday’s weather was predominantly in a force 3 and mostly dry. The races were highly competitive and this “surprising” fact was noted by Steve Hunt the host club Commodore. A protest (upheld) helped determine the overall results.
Consistency is the way to win a regatta and Judi Figgures with her crew Marion Edwards with 4 seconds and 2 firsts took the trophy.
Such was the success of the event that club offered to host the 2008 event. Thanks go to Bassenthwaite Sailing Club, Northern Dales Consulting Ltd, the Calvert Trust and Pinnell & Bax Ltd.
