2007 Manila Boracay Race Series and Presidents Cup

by Hyde Sails 22 Mar 2007 07:02 PDT

In early March a fleet of 23 yachts participated in a week long regatta consisting of two separate events both organised and managed by Manila Yacht Club.

The Manila to Boracay eStandard Insurance Race, was the first event, won by the S&S36 (82), IRResistible who also came first in IRC1 class. Powered by a brand new cross cut Dacron Hyde main which complimented the roller furling headsail and 1.5oz spinnaker cut by Hyde last year. She was the only boat sailing in the fleet with an exclusive Hyde inventory. IRResistible, owned by Josie Brizuela and skippered by Harry Taylor was built twenty years ago by Holiday Boats in the Philippines.

Half way through the week saw the start of the 14th annual Presidents Cup. This was the first time the 6 race series, which originated as the Easter Regatta in Subic and Manila, was held in Boracay. Conditions were favourable with a steady 15 to 25 NE Amihan trade winds which made for great racing. The winner was Jellik in IRC Racing Class whilst Sandoway took the honours in IRC 1.

Dutchman Klass Huisjes and his crew flew over from Holland to race Sandoway, a Bashford Howison 36, using the brand new Hyde Tri Radial Kevlar Mainsail and No 1, both fresh from the loft, to good effect.

When the two events were combined Sandoway was declared the overall IRC1 winner and IRRestible was placed second. China Rose, skippered by Rainer Blum using a 1.5oz Hyde Spinnaker, in the distinctive black, red and gold colours of the German Flag sailed China Rose to victory in both races for the PY Cruising Class.
