The St Helena Yacht Club grew out of the Governor’s Cup Yacht Race, and the interest in sailing that it generated. Young St Helenian’s began sailing after the donation of two dinghies from race supporter, Nina MacLenan in 1996. At present, the club has over 20 members, including a number of overseas subscribies. Along with the 2 Soldano dinghies, the club has acquired 4 Hobie Cats and an open keel boat (over a number of years) using donations and funding rasing efforts.

The Yacht Club is located in an 18th century listed building on the seafront of the island, a hop and a skip from the landing steps. With the seafront area at present being redeveloped the Club has not been has active as it would like to be, but has been busy await from the water in developing new areas for growing the Club commercially in near future, along with organizing the Governor's Cup Yacht Race 2008.
Over the course of the 6 Governor’s Cup Yacht Races, many of the club’s members have competed in the race, enriching yachting on the island and the club. The challenge of participation in the Governor’s Cup Yacht Race provides the motivational incentive for a large percentage of the members of the club.
