Message of support for Quake affected Clubs

For those of us who did not experience the Canterbury Earthquake of September 4th first-hand, thoughts immediately turned to those we know in the region.

For the Board and Management team at Yachting New Zealand that means the Canterbury yachting and boating community including the region’s Yacht Club Officers and members, YNZ Councillor Brett Willcock and our NZCT Regional Support Officer Kate Spackman. News on Canterbury’s Yacht Clubs and the impact of the Quake came through to Yachting New Zealand quickly and was reported in the last issue of Briefings.

The YNZ Board acting promptly to get a message of support out to Canterbury’s Club Commodores directly:-
“It is difficult to comprehend the impact that not only the quake itself, but also the aftermath must have on you all in Canterbury, and we want to pass on our best wishes and thoughts to you at this difficult and challenging time,” said Jan Dawson, YNZ President.

“We sincerely hope that you and your friends, colleagues, fellow yachties and family are all coping in the immediate aftermath, and as the clean-up and rebuilding is carried out. “The Board of Yachting New Zealand wish to offer assistance to the region’s Yacht Clubs and will consider applications for levy relief where Club revenue will be affected due to the earthquake.”

Pleasant Point Yacht Club rallies

Tenacity and spirit shines through in the Commodore’s message in the latest member newsletter from the worst hit of Canterbury’s Clubs - Pleasant Point Yacht Club.

“Our immediate focus is to get our sailing season started... from where and when is yet to be determined but we are adamant that this will happen, so watch this space,” says PPYC Commodore, Ian Douglas. “Our next focus is dealing with the various companies and authorities that have an influence on our future.”

“It is at times like this that belonging to a club can help. If anyone has a particular problem, contact a Committee member, there may be someone in the Club’s network who can solve it for you,” says Douglas.

“The main thing is to keep yourself busy, make plans to make things better and if all else fails go for a sail and get away from it all for a while.”

Nigel Humphries from Pleasant Point Yacht Club provides the latest from the constantly evolving story, “Events since Sept 4th have further damaged the building, with one wall at the entrance and kitchen side separating into its individual concrete blocks.”

“We are awaiting the Engineers Report and the Insurance Company’s response to that Report... but we know that it will be a bulldozer job,” he says.

“The main issue with our land, at the mouth of the Avon River, is that it has slumped towards the river and we anticipate significant ground engineering will be needed for any structure.”

“The next issue is a wider one affecting at least five Canterbury Yacht Clubs and that is water quality. The authorities are warning that it could take a year before the water and sewer system is repaired fully.”

Update from other Quake affected Clubs

Christchurch Yacht Club sustained minor damage in the initial 7.1 earthquake but received various cracks in a later aftershock.

Due to poor water quality the club did not race, but still held its opening on 18th October. Water quality indicates that the club should be back on the water sailing weekend 1st – 2nd October.

Nick Richardson,
Commodore, Christchurch Yacht Club

Mount Pleasant Yacht Club escaped without damage.  Sailing on Opening Day was cancelled but the ceremonies were well attended.  Racing should resume on Saturday 2nd October with only one sailing day lost.

Sailors from other Estuary clubs are welcome to use our facilities in the meantime.  Courses will be adjusted to keep clear of areas of poor water quality emanating from the Avon River. (based on latest Ecan advice)

Scott Leith takes Masters World title

New Zealand has a new World Champion in Laser Masters sailing after Scott Leith took out the Radial Apprentice Masters Division with a day to spare.

The 2010 Laser Masters World Championships, which includes seven separate age determined divisions sailing in both standard rig and radial rig Lasers, has just concluded at Hayling Island, Great Britain. Scott Leith was racing in the Radial rig among a fleet of 24 sailors aged between 35 and 44 years.

Dominant in his division throughout the ten race series Leith clocked up six race wins and never finished outside the top three. He had the title sewn up before the final day even started, but hit the water and rounded out the series on a high note with a couple of race wins, finishing up nine points clear of his closest rival.

“I really don’t know what I feel. I am pretty amazed that it is all over just like that,” said Leith talking after his win. “I put a lot into it. The last four months of training have paid off.”

Leith competed in 2009 in Halifax where he placed second. This year he arrived at the venue early for some training and he comments on what made the difference on 2010: “From last year I have improved all around the race track: strategy, starts I have been starting pretty conservatively so I am happy that I got away cleanly on every start.”

“And my level of fitness is extremely high compared to last year. More time in the boat, more technique. Downwind I was probably the fastest in the fleet, and that is time on the water and just learning that it is all about timing, not trying too hard.”

Hamish Atkinson also made the podium for New Zealand winning bronze in the Radial Master fleet for sailors aged 45-54 years. The only South Islander in the 15 strong team, Atkinson had this to say...

“Our Radial Masters fleet had 55 entries from 16 different countries. This meant very long start lines and it was important to get a good front row start and be able to hold your lane in clear air. With difficult starts and shifty winds, it was quite easy to find yourself in the mid twenties around the first windward mark. My biggest ‘get out of jail card’ was my downwind speed and if necessary I found that I could catch the back of the leading bunch and then peg back places from there.”

“It was certainly my consistency that gained me 3rd place overall with a 6/4/10/7/4/6/8/(32)/3/(16) 48 pts scorecard.”

Minoprio tops ISAF Rankings and hunts WMRT title

With the latest ISAF World Rankings out recently, BlackMatch Skipper Adam Minoprio was again # 1, signalling over a year at the top, as the World’s Highest Ranked Skipper.

Following an emphatic victory at the World Tour Event in Denmark and a third the week before in St Moritz, Adam was able to yet again hold off challenges from the #2 ranked Ben Ainslie and the current World Tour leader Mathieu Richard, who managed to claim the #3 ranking, displacing Danish Open runner up Torvar Mirsky.

Not only was the recent win in Denmark a timely one for this ranking release, but BlackMatch have managed to significantly close the gap on the early runaway leader of the World Tour, Mathieu Richard.

“Now trailing the flying Frenchman by only 17 points, a good result in Bermuda would see us drawing close to even and would mean going into the final deciding event in Malaysia with a very, very good shot at the overall title,” reports BlackMatch.

BlackMatch Racing is Adam Minoprio, Dan McLean, Tom Powrie, David Swete and Nick Blackman

Women’s Match Race Action

The NZL Sailing Team’s Women’s Match Race have been in action against the world’s best at the ISAF Women’s Match Race World Championships in Rhode Island, New York preceded by the Buddy Melges Challenge at Lake Michigan.

The first of these two major regattas – the Buddy Melges Challenge – was sailed in the Elliott 6m Olympic boat, and the kiwis sailed through the round robins, going through the semi-finals and then go head to head with Australia’s Nicky Souter in the final. After a tough battle they came away with the silver medal... read more here>

From Michigan they moved on to sail for the World title being contested in the four-person Sonar fleet at Newport, Rhode Island hosted by the New York Yacht Club.

With Samantha Osborne at the helm the women narrowly missed the cut for the gold fleet and their hopes of making the quarter-finals hinged on the repechage sailed in 5-8 knots of south easterly. First up was Croatia.

“We started well and were able to put a win on the board,” report the team. “Next was Denmark, where we had an even start, however the turning point of the race was allowing Demark the right hand side two thirds up the first beat. We kept it close but were never able to get back in the game.”
“We then meet Russia which was our last opportunity to qualify for the quarter finals. Russia had a small lead but we again kept the game close and on the second beat got back even with the Russians.”

“Unfortunately we received a penalty in the crucial moments before the final mark rounding. From here, the Russians came out just in front with us one penalty down. No real passing lanes opened up, giving Russia the spot in the stage three sail off.”

From here the team will head back to NZ for some hard training over the summer and some more local regattas in Asia and Australia.

The team in New York included Samantha Osborne, Jenna Hansen, Raynor Smeal and Susannah Pyatt, who were coached by Graeme Sutherland.

ETNZ secure Audi MedCup for 2010

The mistral really blew at Cagliari last Saturday bringing an abrupt end to the 2010 Audi MedCup 2010 series with Emirates Team New Zealand taking the top spot.

With three of the regatta’s 11 races cancelled, Emirates Team New Zealand finished the Cagliari regatta third behind Matador and Audi A1. Matador (Argentina) finished on 25.5 points and Audi and NZL 380 on 38, with the countback going to the French-German team.

The Russian entry Synergy was chasing hard, finishing on 38.5 points.

The mistral, blowing well into the 30s, ended the regatta and the season. Emirates Team New Zealand won the 2010 series, the first team to successfully defend the title.

The win was achieved in the face of a vastly improved standard across the fleet which kept the pressure on sailing and shore crews alike.

Skipper Dean Barker acknowledged the strength of the opposition: “We had to work very hard and never felt comfortable or secure. We didn’t win as freely as we did in 2009. Crew work and tactics had to be spot on and reliability was tested over and over again.”

Emirates Team New Zealand set up the season with a win at Cascais, Portugal, in May winning three races as well as the key coastal race and gaining an initial lead of 20 points.

Then followed a fourth at Marseille, second at Barcelona and first at Cartagena.

Barker: ‘We were planning to finish the season with a flourish. We needed two more races today if we were to improve our position on the leaderboard. It was a very hard regatta and Matador sailed so well – they couldn’t do anything wrong.”

Barker said he was proud to be part of a great team. “Their professionalism is outstanding. They never give up.

“The shore crew prepared the boat so well. We did 44 races without any significant gear failure.”

The team now prepares for a Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta to be raced at Dubai in November.

Split Enz to defend Coastal record against giant red tri

Split Enz has held the race record in the HSBC Premier Coastal Classic for 14 years, and for the second year in a row will make the journey from Noumea to New Zealand to defend its honour.

The vintage pink boat, dubbed the ‘Pink Pig’ was dogged by a rudder problem in 2009 that prevented its crew from pushing it beyond cruising pace, but is back better than ever for 2010.

And it will have to be, because racing for the first time ever is Simon Hull’s giant Orma 60, TeamVodafoneSailing, which aims to be the first boat ever to break the six hour barrier, to beat Split Enz’s standing record for multihulls of 7 hours and 20 minutes, and to beat the overall race record set in 2009 by Alfa Romeo of 6 hours and 43 minutes.

Apart from some tweaking to the sails and strengthening work, Split Enz remains in nearly identical configuration as its 1996 record blitz.

Owner Georges Auteret says from Noumea, that he secured a shipping sponsor to help him bring the boat to New Zealand and is determined to prove the boat still has the ability to perform very well. He also enjoys the opportunity to race the boat against other top multihulls.

TeamVodafoneSailing is not the only competition for the sleek pink boat – Roger Pagani’s new fifty foot catamaran Tripe 8 is out to make a splash, as are reworked multihulls Frantic Drift (owned by Olympian Dan Slater), Dragon and Timberwolf, all sporting new America’s Cup style technologies, and twice line honours winner, Taeping.

Joining HSBC Premier, which is also sponsor of Division 1, are eight divisional sponsors, each contributing prizes to its line honours winners and handicap placegetters: Musto (Division 2), Safety at Sea (Division 3), Mt Gay Rum (Division 4), Steinlager (Division 5), Duke of Marlborough Hotel (Division 6), RAILBLAZA Ltd (Division 7), Jucy Rentals (Division 8), PredictWind.com (IRC), and SailNZ (Classic Division).

Snitch GPS will provide real-time GPS tracking of ten members of the race fleet, and Sunday Star Times and Trade-A-Boat Magazine are official media partners to the race.

Predictwind.com will issue an official, detailed race forecast on the eve of the race.

The supermaxi Alfa Romeo broke a thirteen-year record drought when it set a new overall record last year, completing the race in 6 hours and 43 minutes, but Split Enz remains the fastest multihull to ever finish the race with a record set in 1996 of 7 hours and 20 minutes.

The HSBC Premier Coastal Classic starts from 10am on Friday 22 October off Devonport Wharf in Auckland, and finishes off Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands.

Stack Interiors Winter Champs to be summer season starter

A programme of pre-race coaching with the top echelons of sailing has seen the Stack Interiors Winter Champs become an institution on the sailing calendar for young grassroots sailors.

Image left: Mark Overington working with the Starling sailors yesterday

Run by Murrays Bay Yacht Club in Auckland’s North Shore, the regatta, which starts on Friday 1 October, is an icebreaker that features three days of racing for junior and youth classes, and two days of racing for senior classes.

It also includes two days of intensive coaching in the lead up to racing. Run by Olympian Andrew Brown and Adrian Mannering, with the assistance of more than 20 top youth sailors including 420 World Champion Alex Maloney, Optimist World Champion Chris Steele, and Olympic class sailors Sara Winther and Jo Aleh, the coaching has provided a reason for sailors from throughout the country to travel to the event.

“This coaching is a real point of difference for the Winter Champs,” says Murrays Bay Sailing Club Commodore, Craig Moss. “It started in 2006 and thanks to the support we receive from top coaches and sailors, is highly successful.”

Kim Admore, NZCT Regional Support Officer reports on the first day of coaching yesterday, “We had awesome weather with a slowly building breeze which made coaching a pleasure for both sailors and coaches.”

And then there is the racing: with an estimated 17 fleets adding up to an expected 250 boats on the starting line, the Stack Interiors Winter Champs is one of the biggest regattas in the country.

Those attending include the traditional junior classes such as Optimists, Starlings and P-Class, as well as modern classes such as Lasers, RXS and Techno Boards, racing in the waters between Murrays Bay and Rangitoto.

"Stack Interiors are supporting this event because we see it as a great opportunity for young sailors to experience sailing in big fleets, rubbing shoulders with some of the 'elite' of New Zealand sailing,” says David Gunn of Stack Interiors. “If we can support the young people coming through it provides a great base for New Zealand sailing and provides valuable life skills for the kids involved"

Vodafone are providing a ticket for a lucky winner to sail on the massive record-breaking catamaran TeamVodafoneSailing, and other supporters of the event include principal sponsor and business interior design specialists Stack Interiors, the Auckland Yachting and Boating Association, Yachting New Zealand and Harken.

Coaching will take place on Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 September, with racing starting on Friday 1 September for Juniors, and Saturday 2 September for Youth and Seniors.

Admin, Training and Safety

Courses and Seminars: Big Thank You
Over the last few months a total of four Race Management Courses have been run by facilitators John and Linda Parrish in Dunedin, Wellington, Auckland and Kerikeri with excellent numbers attending in all regions.

John and Linda run an excellent Seminar - always interesting and fun!

A successful Match Racing Umpire Seminar was run in Wellington at the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, by Wayne Boberg. Many of the attendees had attended Wayne’s previous Seminar there the year before, so it was great to be able to build on that experience and with the RPNYC Youth Squad running racing over the weekend plenty of practical experience was available.

A Teams Racing Umpire seminar is to take place this coming weekend at Algies Bay just prior to the Teams Racing Interdoms. It will be a team collaboration with Wayne Boberg running the general umpiring side of things, and Jim Park adding the Teams Racing flavour. We are looking forward to that being a great weekend!

A level 1 Judges Seminar and two Level 2 Judges Seminars have been run in Marakura, Christchurch and Auckland with facilitators Ross May, John Bullot and Shane Borrell.

And a total of nine Club Instructor Courses and one Keelboat Instructor Course have been run from Dunedin to Whangarei… so it has been a busy few months. It is good to get these courses and seminars away before everyone gets busy sailing.

We’d like to say a big thank you to our facilitators, and to the Yacht Clubs that have hosted these YNZ Seminars and Courses from Southland to Kerikeri and places in between.

The schedule for the next round of Seminars and Courses will published on the YNZ website by the end of April 2011.
Race Officials Qualified
The following people have recently been revalidated as YNZ National Judges; Sandy Grigg and Jamie Sutherland.

Congratulations to Hana Maguire on attaining her National Judge qualification.

And revalidated as a National Race Officer – Teresa Tootill.

Many thanks to you all for the time and effort you put into gaining and maintaining these qualifications. And for the time you devote to our sport.
470 Junior Coaching
Sailors intending to compete at the 2012 470 Junior World Championships are invited to attend an induction day with Coach and Olympian Andrew Brown, on tomorrow, Thursday 30th September.

This opportunity is offered by Murrays Bay Sailing Club as part of the pre-regatta coaching programme on offer this week ahead of Stack Interiors Winter Champs. Sailors simply wishing to know more about them 470 and how it’s set up, or 420 sailors are also welcome to attend.

“We will go through the set up of a top boat and get all the secrets, talk over coaching plans, regatta plans and I will answer any questions,” says Andrew Brown. “Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie will be there for some time, to share some knowledge as well.”

The 2012 470 Junior Worlds for sailors under 22 years of age, (born no earlier than 1991) will be hosted by Takapuna Boating Club in early 2012. Top international sailors attending the 2011 470 Worlds in Perth in November next year are expected to come to Auckland for the Junior Worlds, shipping their boat straight from Perth to New Zealand.

Tomorrow’s clinic will start at 1030 at Murrays Bay Sailing Club. You can email andrew@forceracing.co.nz or phone Andrew on 027 222 5159 or just show up at 1030 tomorrow.

SPARC reminds adventurers to get applications in

Adventurers are being reminded they can apply for grants under the Hillary Expeditions Grants initiative run by Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC).

Up to $100,000 is available to help adventurous Kiwis fund challenging outdoor expeditions.

Hillary Expeditions Grants are made available every two years and applications for the 2010/11 round close at 5pm on 15 October, 2010.

To qualify for a grant, expeditions have to include any one, or a combination, of outdoor activities such as tramping, mountaineering, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, white water and/or sea kayaking, mountain biking, and sailing.

Criteria and application forms are available on SPARC’s website www.sparc.org.nz. The successful applicants will be announced in December 2010.

Expeditions funded in the past have involved extreme adventures and have included world firsts. For instance, Hillary Expeditions have included attempts at crossing the Greenland ice cap, a successful first ascent of Karim Sar in the Batura region of northern Pakistan, success while big wall rock climbing in the Karakorum ranges of Pakistan, new routes on peaks in Antarctica, extreme river trips, and this year’s discovery and exploration of New Zealand’s first 1000m deep cave.

New Zealand is known for its great adventurers like Sir Edmund Hillary. The grants initiative helps Kiwi adventurers realise their dreams in the outdoors. Their feats inspire other New Zealanders to get out into the outdoors.

The Hillary Expeditions Grants initiative was started in 2002, and every two years grants of up to $100,000 are awarded to help fund world class outdoor expeditions.

In the 2008/09 round, seven expeditions were awarded grants ranging from $5000 to $30,000.

New Commodore for French Bay Yacht Club

Titirangi builder Peter Channings has been elected as Commodore of French Bay Yacht Club.

His goal? To build on work done in recent years to inject fun, enthusiasm and vibrancy back into the French Bay sailing fleet.

Peter has lived much of his life in Titirangi, growing up in a sailing family who were active members of the club. He remembers the days when French Bay Beach and the area which is now the carpark would be lined with at least fifty boats on both days of every sailing weekend.
While these days the fleet is smaller, it is every bit as much fun.

“I want to revive it, make it grow into a sustainable yacht club with a very good junior and senior fleet,” he says.

Supporting Peter are Vice Commodore Matt Hall-Smith, and Rear Commodore Don Waterer, Treasurer Don McBeth, and Secretary Paddy Charles, and as a team of hard working volunteers who lead the club’s Learn to Sail program and racing and fun days for all ages.

French Bay Yacht Club is hosting an Open Day on Sunday 10 October. If you’re keen on fun social sailing, get down to the beach at 11.30am and find out what’s involved, try the Yachting NZ Opti Simulator, and get out on the water. Bring your own boat, kayak, canoe or windsurfer, or use one of the club boats.  www.frenchbay.org.nz

H28 Open Day – Public Welcome

What: H28 Yacht Owners Assoc Open Day
When: October 10th from 10am - 3pm
Where: Viaduct Harbour  Berth 21 (in front of O'Hagan's bar)
PLUS... Free sausage sizzle

The H28 Yacht is a one class yacht, an affordable and safe boat for both family, (sleeping up to 6) and solo sailor.  It is a Herreshoff design but built in New Zealand by Compass Yachts in the mid 1970's to mid 1980's.

“We understand that Chris Bouzaid and John Lidguard were involved with design changes.  About 300 yachts were built and many can still be seen sailing around our beautiful harbour, either cruising or racing,” says Carol Morrow from the H28 Owners Association which has an active membership throughout New Zealand.

“Although the yacht is solid and built for cruising comfort, and not speed, you will find on most weekends a number of our members competing in various races.  We join with the Classic Yachts for their racing weekend, as well as the Auckland Anniversary Weekend race from Mahurangi to Auckland,” says Morrow.

Social events are held frequently both on the water and off and there is keen competition for Trophies which are given at prize-giving each year for various events.

“The H28 Open Day is held yearly to show Aucklanders the H28 and to speak with people who may be interested in pursuing a great way of relaxing, socializing, competition and enjoying our wonderful harbour.”

Some boats will be open to the public to board for viewing and any questions can be answered by our friendly boat owners. There will also be on display  H28's that are For Sale.
