ISAF honours Joe Butterfield and Adrienne Greenwood

Joe Butterfield and Adrienne Greenwood were amongst the four people awarded with Gold Medals for services to ISAF at the ISAF General Assembly in Madrid.  Adrienne is heavily involved in international sailing administration, and has held the role of Chair of the Women’s Sailing Federation, amongst other committee posts, for the last four years. Joe Butterfield has been an international judge since 1989. He was part of the group that set up the International Sailing Federation to establish the International Umpires Program and qualifications, and was an international umpire from 1989 to 2005. Since 1994 Joe has been an ISAF Councillor for Area L, and has served a number of ISAF committees.

Countdown to the Excellence Awards

Who will be named the Singapore Airlines Sailor of the Year, and Young Sailor of the Year? Find out next Friday 28 November when all nominees, winners and recipients will be announced at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. For those that have not purchased tickets, tesults will also be posted on the Yachting New Zealand website.

Independent petition presented over Seabed Charges

Sailor Geoff Burgess has presented an independent petition of over 1,300 signatures to Auckland Regional Council, protesting unfair ARC seabed charges to some Auckland boaties for their sport and recreation. Geoff explains that seabed charges are well in excess of other occupational charges for recreational facilities on public space, and are not uniformly applied, which amounts to serious discrimination by the ARC against boating as a sport, in Auckland. The petition asks that ARC begin a consultative process with boating groups, to suspend the existing seabed fees until an equitable charging regime is established, and to treat water based sport facilities on public space in the same way as land based sports facilities on public space. Geoff delivered his presentation text to the ARC ‘Environmental Management Committee’ on Tuesday 18 November. Each Councillor received a pack that included a copy of the signed petition page, correspondence about the issue, and a copy of the Pakuranga Community Council’s letter of support. Geoff says positive discussion continued for some time, and he awaits formal minutes to plan follow-up action.

Wairoa Jubilee Regatta thrills participants

The 2008 Port of Napier sponsored Wairoa Jubilee Regatta and the East Coast Class and Inter-Club Sailing Championships for the Laser, P & Optimist Green fleets were contested on 8 and 9 November. Sailing was held in perfect conditions amongst a picturesque environment on the Lower Wairoa River. The Wairoa Club has been established for 50 years, and was attended by co-founders of the club, Brian and Murray Neal, who participated in the event.
Racing in the seven race series provided a wonderful spectacle, with 41 boats and over 50 sailors competing from Gisborne, Wairoa, Napier and Auckland. Racing provided a fantastic spectacle. With colourful spinnakers flying from the Wairoa Bridge to the river bar, many cars pulled up along the river bank to watch.

110 guests, including His Worship the Mayor of Wairoa, Les Probert  attended the Jubilee Dinner and it was obvious to all that Wairoa has a long history of champions and of people committed to growing and developing the sport of sailing.

The tide and current make testing conditions and provided many challenges for the weekend’s sailors.

School regatta in Mahurangi

The Year 7-10 Algies Bay Schools Regatta on Monday 1 December is a fabulous regatta run by Mahurangi College out of Sandspit Yacht Club at Algies Bay. Everyone appreciates a day off school, and the venue is only 45 minutes north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The Regatta attracts good fleets and is a great opportunity to introduce sailors to traveling to and sailing at different venues. The organisers usually comes up trumps with some great spot prizes.

In Memory of Brian Griffin 1945 – 2008

Yachting New Zealand is sad to pass on the news that Brian Griffin passed away on 13 November in Christchurch.
Brian became well known throughout New Zealand thanks to the many Griffin yachts he built in the last two decades.  The first boats he built were wooden keelers, and when his son Daniel started sailing, he began to build Optimist dinghies. Brian continued building yachts as his sons moved through to the P and Starling Classes. Local sailors Dan Leach, Mathew Hannah, Tom Olds (winner of the Tauranga Cup) and Riley Dean (winner of the Tanner Cup) have all represented Canterbury in Griffin yachts. Additionally, Jo Aleh won the Tauranga Cup in a Griffin yacht. In 1996 Dan Leach was runner up in the Tauranga and Tanner Cup in “Diversion” the new controversial designed Griffin P Class. Brian’s new prototype revolutionised the design and building of the P Class which has now been adopted by the Class. Brian attended countless P Class and Starling Regattas with his sons Daniel, Jason and Adam over the years and gave support to many sailors.  One of Brian’s recent protégés Gareth Moore (WPBSC), who won the Canterbury Tanner Cup Trials last weekend. Brian is survived by his wife Paula and sons Daniel, Jason and Adam, and his grandchildren. He will be missed by his friends in Canterbury and throughout New Zealand.

Emily Duncan wins Southern Region P-Class Trials

2 November was the date for the Southern Region’s P Class Trials at Vauxhall Yacht Club. While Saturday’s racing was postponed as the 40knots swept through the racecourse – bringing with it a typical Southern spring fall of snow - Sunday delivered six competitive races. The water was flat, and with a WSW breeze of 9-16 knots, Race Officer Mervyn Read was able to set a good course. Competitors – including five girls and one boy – were Amy Carrick, Emily Duncan, Henry Faulkner, Alice Gee, Freya Griffiths and Rachel Oakley.

Emily Duncan, sailing Arrow P273, and Freya Griffiths, in P 215, vied throughout racing, and despite a capsize, Emily Duncan emerged the winner because of her consistent results and composure.

Further results in the HSBC Premier Coastal Classic

In the last issue of Briefings we highlighted the success of the fleet front-runners in the HSBC Premier Coastal Classic at Labour Weekend. For this issue we’d like to highlight smaller boats, particularly those that excelled on PHRF and line within their divisions: Division 1 was won on line and PHRF by V5. Division 2 was won on line and handicap by Outrageous Fortune. Pacific Sundance took line in Division 3 but was out of contention in handicap – the Farr 1020 Hicky Burr won on PHRF. Division 4 was won by Playbuoy on line, and Hot Property on PHRF. Open Country won Division 5 on Line, and Wishbone took the handicap honours. Within the multihulls, Taeping was the only boat in the big multihull division to finish, and Hooters led over Predictwind.com in its handicap division. Ubique was the only boat entered in the cruising division to complete the race.  Ragtime won on IRC, with Wildtime second and Antaeus third. Full results for all divisions and classes, and detailed race commentary, are online at the official race website, www.coastalclassic.co.nz
