Rose Bowl Regatta all set for Long Beach action

Georgetown University of Washington D.C. and Point Loma High School of San Diego will lead thirty collegiate sailing teams from every corner of the country and sixty high school teams from throughout California into the 28th annual Rose Bowl Regatta at Long Beach, California Saturday and Sunday.

Two-person college and high school Gold fleet crews---some coed---will race 13-foot, 3-inch CFJ dinghies near the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier in the Long Beach outer harbor. The high school Silver fleet will race inside Alamitos Bay.

Racing will start at 11 a.m. each day, conditions permitting. The pier will be open to spectators, with concessions and comfort stations available. The forecast is for light winds.

The event, based at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, is hosted by the USC Sailing Team and organized by the US Sailing Center of Long Beach.

Eastern schools dominate college sailing, but some will be competing with California sailors, including Georgetown freshman Nevin Snow.

Boston College is the Rose Bowl defending champion, but Georgetown finished the 2012 season ranked No. 1.

Point Loma, currently leading Cathedral Catholic, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar in the 2012-2013 season high school standings for the Roy E. Disney Trophy, will try to extend its dominance of the prep competition---now standing at six consecutive Rose Bowl Regatta Gold fleet championships, most in feisty battles with Newport Harbor, which last won in 2006.

Point Loma is led by Will LaDow, who with crew Nikki Obel won the Club 420 competition in a field of 74 boats at the Orange Bowl Regatta in Florida last week. Event website
