Match Race Germany - Team Gilmour into Quarter-Finals

by Team Gilmour on 8 Jun 2014
Close finish for Team Gilmour against Francesco Bruni in super light winds this morning. Ian Roman / WMRT
It has been a tough qualifying round here at Match Race Germany with very very light and variable winds throughout. Early starts compounded with long periods waiting for wind have made the days long and frustrating. But after our 11 round robin races we managed to finish with six wins and five losses placing us sixth.

The format at this event allows the top qualifier from the round robin a place directly into the semi-finals, Ian Williams finished on top and gets to wait the quarter finals out. The next top qualifier was Phil Robertson and his Waka Racing Team from New Zealand, Phil chose us as his opponent for the quarter finals, while Bjorn Hansen from Sweden had the next choice and decided to sail against Mathieu Richard from France which left Keith Swinton to race against last year’s Tour champions Taylor Canfield.

We are now feeling quite confident in the large Bavaria 40's particularly after winning all three of our races today. We are looking forward to getting back out on the water tomorrow and taking to Kiwi's on in the best of five quarter final series. The conditions are forecast to be similar to today with light variable winds and sunshine, the crowds will be out for what will be a lovely Sunday!

Quarter final pairings Match Race Germany:

Taylor Canfield (IVS) vs Keith Swinton (AUS)
David Gilmour (AUS) vs Phil Robertson (NZL)
Bjorn Hansen (SWE) vs Mathieu Richard (FRA)
Ian Williams (GBR) (straight through to semi finals)
