J/70 Corinthian US Nationals opens with perfect breeze

by Julie and Christopher Howell on 22 Oct 2016
Fleet in action - J/70 Corinthian National Championship Dan Phelps
Mother Nature welcomed 44 boats to the inaugural J/70 Corinthian US National Championship with 'chamber of commerce' conditions of sunny skies and 12-14 knot winds on the Chesapeake Bay.

Hosted by Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis, MD, this ground-breaking event has brought together all-amateur teams for three days of competition and the honor of being the first-ever Corinthian US National Champion. Working his way to that goal on Friday was local Peter McChesney who notched a two, two, one for just five points. Jack Franco won two races, but added a sixth-place tally, landing him in second place overall at eight points. Jenn & Ray Wulff stand in third with 11 points.

Franco got things going with the day’s first bullet, followed by McChesney and the Wulffs. Behind Franco in race two were McChesney and Henry Filter. McChesney secured the day’s overall advantage by winning the last meeting, as John Wilsey and the Liebel/Rubin/Walsh/Britts gang rounded out the top three.

Racing continues through Sunday.
