Eventful start for the Frostbite Series

On a cold but dry morning, with an odd glimpse of the sun, the Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s Doyle Sails Frostbite Series got the New Year racing season off to an eventful start in a NNE 10 – 15 knot wind. Unfortunately there were two collisions; one before the start of Race 1 and one at the start of Race 2 leading to a protest still to be heard.
The wind dictated short leg cascade courses that kept everybody busy and gave close racing in all Classes. The same courses were used for both races although the sudden unanticipated change from a stand to an ebb after the start of Race Two due to the recent heavy rains needed a swift change in tactics.
In Class One, Alice kept Winston at bay in both races on both elapsed and corrected time followed home by Blackjack in Race One and Indulgence in Race 2 on corrected time. In Class Two it was honours even between Blazer and Erik the Red with Blazer winning Race One followed by Erik the Red and positions reversed for Race Two. They were followed by Yogi in third for both races. In Class Three Jammin was first in both races followed in by J arrow and Serendip 4 in Race 1 and Serendip 4 and Faze 3 in Race 2.
This year, our Sponsors Doyle Sails, are generously providing backpacks for the highest placed boat in Class for that day who is present for the racing results back in the Clubhouse. In Class One it was Alice then Winston and Indulgence. In Class Two it was Erik the Red then Blazer and Yogi and in Class Three Jammin then Serendip 4 and J arrow.
We had a good turnout, a decent breeze and close racing and hope to more of the same for Races 3 and 4 in two weeks’ time on 27th January.
