2014 Off Valparaíso Race - Santander team victorious

by Soto 40 on 20 Oct 2014
2014 Soto 40 South American Tour Catalina Pérez
After three days of racing in the Valparaíso bay, the Santander team was crowned champion of the Off Valparaíso Race, first stage of the Soto 40 South American Tour that was held in the Yacht Club de Chile with the participation of eight boats.

The sport day was delayed once again due to lack of wind in the race area. After waiting for more than one hour, the Race Committee went to Concón looking for more wind and finally found it in front of Reñaca beach, where it set the last windward-leeward course of the event. After 3:30 pm CLST the fifth race started with a 25 knots SW wind.

Eduardo Souza Ramos’ Phoenix started leading the fleet and was the first to tack the windward and leeward marks, but after the second windward because of a problem in a maneuver it lost its leadership and finally crossed the finish line in last position, vanishing its possibilities of winning the event. Today’s winner was Bernardo Matte’s Pisco Black. Horacio Pavez’s Mitsubishi arrived after it, followed by Santander.

Three points were enough for Jorge Araneda’s boat to win the title in the Off Valparaíso Race, which besides being the first stage of the Soto 40 South American Tour is also the first date for the Soto 40 fleet in the prestigious 2014-2015 Chile’s Nacional Oceánico Championship. Phoenix finished second position overall and Mitsubishi third position. Horacio Pavez’s team really improved its performance and managed to climb from the fifth to the third place with the last two races.

The crewmembers of the winning boat are Jorge Araneda (owner), Juan Barrios, Gonzalo Ramos, Robert Riegel, Gabriel Marino, Leonardo D'Onofrio, Guillermo Arrondo, Jorge Araneda Aspillaga, Sebastián Moral and Andrés Domato.

The next stage of the Soto 40 South American Tour will be the 'Semana de la Vela', which will be held in Chile on January 24th – 31th. In March the fleet will go to Punta del Este (Uruguay) and in April to Florianópolis (Brazil), where we’ll celebrate the third world championship of the class.
