WOW What A Regatta!

by Lori Mason on 4 Jul 2011
All the racers and committee boat crew - WOW Regatta Lori Mason
The first WOW Regatta hosted at Island Yacht Club, and sponsored by The Store Mason’s Chandlery, Ontario Sailing, Island Yacht Club and Skippers Plan, was a great success!

We had six boats and 33 women participating, from Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club, Toronto Hydroplane Sailing Club, Island Yacht Club, National Yacht Club, Lakeshore Yacht Club, Bronte Outer Harbour and Fifty Point Yacht Club as well as a committee boat from Lakeshore Yacht Club, Mimico Crusing Club and Port Credit Yacht Club.

The weather was a little unstable on Saturday with winds from the south west, so we had the option to sail inside the harbour with flat seas and we did. With only one freighter delaying the second race, we had three clear start races with winds 8 to 15 knots and six very competitive boats.

Finishing Overall:
1st place - Uncorked FPYC with Cindy as skipper
2nd place – Defiant NYC with Marilee as skipper
3rd place – Latis ABYC with Carolyn as skipper
4th place – Eau Natural THSC with Dorothy as skipper
5th place – Wow Wee IYC with Bev (LSYC) as skipper
6th place – Runaway II Bronte Outer Harbour with Valerie as skipper

The fun continued into the evening with a fantastic BBQ at IYC where winner’s flags were presented and everyone got to our draw from the prize table provided by our sponsors. Even the husbands had fun! Our celebrity racer Diane Reid came back in time from her Bermuda race to participate and speak at the first (now annual) WOW Regatta!

So the only thing that we can improve on is more boats and more women participants for next years regatta. And yes there will be one, so all you women racers and those who want to try racing (we balance out the boats if you didn’t bring a full crew) make sure you watch for the announcement and sign up!

Your WOW Committee would like to thank all the women who came and supported the first WOW Regatta, all of our sponsors for the great prizes and Island Yacht Club for a wonderful location!
Katrina Lewis, Lori Mason, Donna Scott and Vicky Sutherland!
