The race got underway in winds that were more westerly than expected, most of the bigger yachts started on the southern end of the start line, taking a faster line to North Head, and then went on the wind to Rangitoto Light, at the entrance to the Hauraki Gulf. The race is normally a fast reach up the coast, however unusually many of the fleet had to tack to clear Rangitoto Light, and looked set to grind out the 120nm course to the Bay of Islands.
