A-class Catamarans- Second day of racing blown out in Pre-Worlds

Rough on shore winds again at the A-class NZ Nationals , Takapuna February 7, 2014 Richard Gladwell www.photosport.co.nz

For the second day in a row, no racing was held in the 2014 NZ A-class Catamaran Nationals at Takapuna Beach.

Winds gusting up to 35kts plagued the inner Hauraki Gulf, whipping up substantial seas, which come ashore as surf at Takapuna in that wind direction.

Even if sailing had been possible, gear damage would ahve been substantial launching the 18ft singlehanders into the surf.

Organisers were faced with a dilemma in that the three day regatta is yet to start, with two days lost.

Decisions had to be made on the future of the regatta, and it was decided to reduce the minimum series, and to try to sail five races tomorrow, with an earlier start time. Conditions are expected to be much more favourable.

The primary function of the nationals is to provide pre-Worlds racing at the venue which has hosted 15 World Championships to date.

Measuring for the Worlds will start on Sunday.
