While collecting specimens from northwest Florida’s Chipola River for a black bass study, FWC researchers encountered fish with DNA profiles that did not belong to any known species. After genetically testing archived bass tissues, they determined the profiles were from a new species, which scientists have provisionally named the Choctaw bass (Micropterus haiaka).
