Travemuende Week - Day 6

Forty-six international teams challenged for the European title at Travemuende Week, which finished on Saturday in the Bay of Luebeck. After nine races, Alister Richardson/Dan Johnson stood on top of the podium, followed by their countrymen Archie Massey/George Nurton and Katie Nurton/Nigel Ash.

The best mixed crew earned ‘bronze’, whilst Oliver Voss/Jens Holscher (GER) finished sixth; the best non-British crew.

‘We had a great time here in Travemuende, nice venue, fine racing – we will
come back for sure,' said first-time European champion, Richardson, at the
prize-giving.

The 26 year-old from Bournemouth, who also earlier crewed in the Tornado for Olympian Hugh Styles, finished second in the first half of the 116th Travemuende Week. He sailed an impressive 14's series, with title defender and temporary crew, Johnson on the jib sheets.

‘We had pretty good rig trim and were really fast on the course,' explained 33 year-old Johnson from London, as to why they dominated the fleet so much.

After a second in the opening race and five bullets, Richardson/Johnson had
the luxury of returning to shore with two DNC discards at the end. ‘We have a
very strong skiff fleet in the U.K., with regattas every single weekend in
the summer season,' Johnson said, adding, ‘we are pushing each other to the
edge.’ The winners also mentioned that Voss/Holscher sailed a smart regatta. 'They are pretty fast too - and not that easy to beat.’

Other victories at Travemuende week went to Great Britain, Poland and two to Germany.

Christopher Lorenz/Friedrich Gebert from Berlin are the new German junior champions in the 470 class. Polish entry, ‘Tradewinds’, sailed by Artur Pomorski, won the German Open in the Sportsboat class. The best 18
footer trio, Barton/Borrett/Turbull, represented Great Britain, while Duesseldorf based Roland Franzmann, was top scorer in the O dinghy.
