A crew of four young men, who have spent the last 26 days rowing 2,000 miles non-stop around Britain, have established a new world record when they reached Tower Bridge this afternoon (Thursday).

The crew – known as the Islanders because all come from islands – knocked 12.05 hours off the existing world record when they came home in 26 days 09 hours and 09 minutes.

For setting that new record, skipper Josh Taylor, 23, Alan Morgan, 23, from Mersea Island, Essex, James Plumley, 24, from Guernsey and 25-year-old Gavin Sheehan from southern Ireland, won a £100,000 bounty from the organisers of GBRow 2013 – the world’s toughest rowing race.

Their £100,000 world record bonus plus a £15,000 first prize, is the biggest prize ever in world GB Row Challenge
