'Sailing Close to the Wind' - following Phoenicia around Africa

by Sail-World Cruising on 15 Jan 2013
Sailing Close to the Wind - the Phoenicia reaches London SW
The long awaited book, Sailing Close to the Wind, about the Phoenicia's 20,000 mile voyage that recreated the first circumnavigation of Africa by Phoenician mariners is now available. The Phoenicia was a sailing craft recreated as a replica of those of the ancient Phoenicias.

Philip Beale, as Captain, and his crew made the journey to prove the Phoenicians could have done it and their amazing adventure was reported on frequently by Sail-World Cruising during their journey.

The book covers the building of the ship, the set backs, dealing with piracy off the Somali coast and sailing around the Cape of Good Hope.

It is a personal account of the story. From the initial idea, the story tells of the set-backs faced by the expedition including the complications in designing and building the vessel.

The book also details life onboard and the interactions of the crew, the issues, the arguments and the debates that arose and how the threat of piracy off Somalia and the dangers of sailing around the Cape of Good Hope were overcome.

The fast moving and amusing narrative places the voyage in the historical context of the Phoenician's almost forgotten civilisation and their incredible maritime achievements.

The book is a softback and covers some 220 pages with over 40 colour photos and illustrations and sells for £9.99 plus £2.71 for UK postage and packing.

It is a great read and will make an ideal seasonal gift. Email: info@phoenicia.org.uk for an order form, payment details and further information.
