SOS Ocean Racing - Frustrating 24 hours

It is day 26 into SOS Ocean Racing's effort to break the world record for sailing non-stop solo around Australia. Skipper Ian Thomson is currently located in the Southern Ocean and commented that is it not what he was expecting.

Ian reported in this morning at 1130 mentioning that he has had a very frustrating 24 hours. ‘I feel like I am going nowhere, yesterday I only traveled a total of 88 nautical miles!'

Save Our Seas Ocean Racing, a 40ft Welbourn yacht is currently located at 350nm WSW of Kangaroo Island, with around 2450nm to the finish. Ian aim is to be back under 50 days; at the moment his current estimated finish time is the 14th of June. Beating the old record that stands at 68 days 8 hours and 30.

Though Ian is stuck in the middle of a high-pressure system and is only cruising at around five to seven knots. He is now expected to round the bottom of Tasmania Thursday morning.

SOS Ocean Racing is about raising awareness of what damage plastic bags does to the environment, in particular the marine environment. With over 100,000 marine animals and 1 million sea birds dying from plastic suffocation or entanglement every year, it is time to get rid of the 'Convenient' plastic bag and use other options.
