Riva Cup - Expectations fulfilled on final day + Video

by Elena Giolai on 1 Jun 2014
Int'l 14 - 2014 Riva Cup Elena Giolai
Upper Garda once again fulfilled its expectations for the Riva Cup where all eight out of eight regattas were completed in three days of competition. This is a result which speaks for itself and offers sailing enthusiasts the perfect conditions for their sport. The final day saw some upsets in some of the classes whereas in others the the top positions remained the same. All the classes raced in a rectangular course except the Int 14' which had a triangular course. The mix of colours and crafts of all the different classes as they crossed each other on the lake was impressive to say the least.

The German crew helmed by Wolfgang Hunger reclaimed its top position in the 505 class after having succumbed to Findel-Tellen on the second day of competition. They in turn dropped to third place on the final day. Hunger-Kleiner achieved a first and a sixth which was enough for them to win by a three point margin over Bogacki-Dehne of Germany. Thirty-six crews took part in this class with many countries represented including Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Great Britain and from as far away as the US, Canada and Australia.

The indisputable winners in the Korsar class were Germans Mahnke-Blum. They finished with a three point advantage over Langner-Diestelmann who climbed from fourth place into second thanks to a brilliant last day highlighted by two victories. Braun-Kruck dropped into third place.

With an exclusively German participation in the Dyas class, the crew of Vetter-Loew won by a whisker (one point). They had been sitting in second place for the last two days when thanks to a second and third as opposed to a first and fifth from their adversaries Bersch-Schmidt, they were able to break away and take first place. Lothar Schmidt - Guenzel held on to third place and had the satisfaction of winning the final race.

With a string of firsts under their belt, Massey-Harvey of Great Britain made it quite clear that they were the the ones to beat in this spectacular class. Standings were unchanged with only one point between Voss-Ehrig of Germany in second place and Fitzgerald-Dobson of Great Britain.
