Rio Olympics – 3 races on Tuesday to decide the 470 medal race line-up

by 470 International Association Class on 16 Aug 2016 Monday 15 August proved to be one of the most frustrating day so far at the Olympic Sailing Competition, with the wind refusing to play fair on Guanabara Bay.

The original scheduled plan put the 470s on Escola Naval course, inside Guanabara Bay. But a lack of breeze influenced the Race Committee to send them out to the Copacabana ocean course, where the fleets would hopefully enjoy a repeat of the great conditions from last Thursday.

By the time the course changes were completed, only one Men's 470 race was started, which resulted in a general recall. But with a weather front rapdily approaching and breeze well in excess of 35 knots, the decision was soon made to cancel racing for safety reasons.

The 470s have completed seven of their opening 10 races, which is officially enough to constitute the opening series, but understandably the Race Committee want to get as many races completed as possible ahead of Wednesday's Medal Race.

The 470 fleets will today race on Niteroi course, with the 470 Men scheduled to start at 1300 and 470 Women at 1310 hours. The forecast breeze is from the west south-west and light, with 2.3 knots and gusts up to 8.9 knots expected at 1300 hours, building to just over 7 knots by 1600 hours. Teams will be desperate to get at least a couple of races in, consolidate positions and secure their place in the top ten leaderboard.

So overnight scores remain and we hope for three races on Tuesday 16 August to complete the opening series.
