Product of the Week- Torqeedo Electric Motor 503/1003

Torqeedo have now refined their earlier versions of outboard motors to come up with a stronger, tougher and smarter version, suitable for tenders, dinghies or even daysailers: The Torqueedo Travel 503/1003.

Key improvements:
• Fully waterproof design, IP 67 (all components can be submersed for 1 hour at 1 metre below surface without any harm).
• Integrated GPS and information system: provides precise real-time information on battery charge status, remaining range at current speed, speed over ground and power consumption (GPSreceiver located in the battery, information display located in the tiller).
• Improved mechanical stability, ruggedness and suitability for salt water use.
• 20% higher power.
• Approx. 10% higher efficiency.
• 30% higher battery capacity for the Travel 1003.
• All models can be solar-charged during operation.
• Audible alarm warns when battery charge status reaches 30%

With the foldable and flexible CIGS solar panel (available as an optional extra) you can charge your Travel battery any time – even during operation. If you charge your battery during operation the real-time range calculation located in the tiller will of course take that effect into consideration. The panel weighs not more than 1.6 kg, unfolded it covers an area of about 1 m².

The Travel 503 and 1003 models are both suitable for inflatables, small boats and sail boats. The 503 is probably for sail boats up to a weight of 750 kg, and the Travel 1003 up to a weight of 1.5 tons.

Both models consume the same level of energy at the same speed. The stronger Travel 1003 has 30% higher battery capacity and therefore superior range. Both models are available in long and short shaft versions.

Safety: The motor shuts off when the magnetic key on the remote throttle control is removed. Therefore, for safety reasons, the magnetic key should be attached to the wrist or the life vest.

The original won the IBEX 2006 award in the outboard category, but now with its improvements, such an innovative electric outboard is worth considering for any small boat from kayaks, inflatables up to a 20 plus footer.

Torqueedo promise that both engines can cover two nautical miles at full throttle, approx. 4.8 knots, and over 10 nautical miles or 6 hours at slow speed.

They have the power, approximately, of a 3 hp normal outboard.

As with most electric products on the market, the price is expensive compared to a regular outboard, but fuel savings will compensate for this over time.
