NZ's winning ways continue in 420 Worlds

Carl Evans and Peter Burling power down a spinnaker reach in the 2007 420 Wolds Sail-World.com /AUS

New Zealand crews continue to dominate the top of the points table in the Open and Womens World 420 Championships being sailed off Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore. Carl Evans and Peter Burling lead the Open, while Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie lead the Women’s.
A light south westerly breeze in the morning increased during the afternoon to around 12 to 15 knots with cloudy skies and good sailing conditions, at Takapuna for the third day of racing.
Defending World Champions Carl Evans and Peter Burling kicked off the finals on a high note with two wins and a second in the three races sailed for the Open fleet. With a total of five points on the leader board, the pair from Auckland and Tauranga respectively now has a nine point lead over closest rivals Simon Cooke and Scott Illingworth.
Cooke and Illingworth, who finished the qualification series in second, today placed 6th, 2nd and 4th and are laying second overall with a total of 14 points.
Rowan Swanson and Bruce Kennedy (NZL) were the other performers in the Open gold fleet today, rounding out the days racing with a win and climbing into third. They have a points total of 19.
While the points table gives the impression that Evans and Burling had an easy time of it, the reality on the water is a different story.
In the first race of the day Evans and Burling rounded the top mark in second place and quickly soaked away to take the lead and then build a substantial margin, winning by the short dog-leg from the final mark to the finish. Second overall Simon Cooke and Scott Illingworth tried the same line after being buried on the first beat, however although they closed right into the lead bunch, they were unable to break through, when the breezr just would not go their way at the right time.
A substantial wind shift and incrrease in wind strength between races sw the course shifted and the open pumping flag broken out.
In the second race it was Burling and Evans turn to get buried at the start. Simon Cooke was determined to make amends for his earlier race and led for the first upwind and downwind legs. A big shift to the left gave Singapore's Justin Liu and Sherman Cheng jump around the fleet and move into the lead. Burling and Evans began the chase and worked through the fleet to take their seond win of the day.
In the third, Evans and Burling were again not in great shape after the start, however stuck to their gameplan, worked the right side and started to pull in boats. Another big shift to the left on the second beat again, worked the way of a German crew, who came through to build a good lead. Evans and Burling were unable to break through the leaders and went onto to finish in second place, unable to break through the NZL combinaton of Thomas Saunders and Bruce Kennedy.
Competition is tight at the top of the Women’s division with the two kiwi crews battling it out. They are now halfway through the 12 race series to decide the 420 Women’s World Champion.
Sarah Bilkey and Rosie Sargisson won the first of today’s two races, and were also then able to discard their worst race score, allowing them to eliminate the point’s gap on overnight leaders Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie.
In today’s second race Aleh and Powrie had the lead at each mark rounding and won the race. This means Aleh and Powrie have stretched out a ten point margin over their kiwi team-mates, who placed 11th in the second race today, at this half way point for the women.
New Zealanders Shelley Hesson and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher are laying third overall while sisters Sarah and Emma Berry, from Wellington are in fourth.
Racing resumes tomorrow at midday.
