2016 Monaco Solar Boat Challenge - It was in a sombre mood that competitors gathered this morning on the quays of the YCM Marina where the Monaco Solar Boat Challenge is taking place until tomorrow. The thoughts of everyone, participants and the organiser, the Yacht Club de Monaco, were with the victims and families caught up in the tragedy that struck Nice late on Thursday night, 14th July.

First on the programme was the Endurance Race followed by the parade, both of which were held in solemn tribute to the victims.

For the ‘YCM Speed record’, the winner from 2015, Gerhard van der Schaar driving the Clafis Victron Energy Solar Team I boat managed to improve on his own record set last year of 44.4km/h to top 49.10 km/h.

Other highlights, included the Endurance Fleet Race which created a spectacle in the bay, with victory going (subject to the jury’s decision) to Dutch Solar Boat in the Challenge A class category and Clafis Victron Energy Solar Boat Team in the Open Class, ahead of TU Delft Solar Team. The two Dutch teams have effectively consolidated their respective World Champion and Vice-Champion titles from last week’s event in the Netherlands.
