Manson's Supreme Anchor-'Super' Status from Lloyds

by Nancy Knudsen on 27 Mar 2008

If you believe the Lloyds Register of Shipping, the Manson Supreme is the best anchor in the world.

It is the only production boat anchor that they have awarded the status of 'Super High Holding Power', in place of the 'High Holding Power' status of more commonly known anchors such as CQR, Delta, Bruce, or Bugel.

Ned Wood, Sales and Marketing Manager of New Zealand based Manson Marine says, 'As the first production boat anchor in the world to receive the accreditation and it being the foremost anchor certification available in the world we have been exceptionally proud that we have developed a product that is capable of such holding power.'

Lloyds Certification is a five step process.

1. Full drawings and construction details are submitted to the Naval Architects for approval.
2. Comprehensive seabed testing is done of the anchor in three different seabed substrates to demonstrate/prove the sought after holding power
3. All welders building the product have to be Lloyds Certified welders.
4. All steel must have metal certificates and be of Minimum Lloyds Grade A Steel.
5. Finally, all anchors over 56kg must have a proof load test on a certified and calibrated test jig witnessed by a Lloyds Surveyor.

It is the theory behind the construction that apparently gives the Manson Supreme its advantage.

Here's how Manson Anchors describe their 'Supreme' model:

The strong, fixed dual-shank anchor (available in high-tensile, galvanized or 316 stainless steel in standard sizes from 5 pounds to 225 pounds and in custom sizes to 1,000 pounds) sets quickly and holds firmly in virtually any type of seabed. A spear head cuts through weeds and a roll bar ensures the correct setting angle.

The Manson Supreme’s unique dual-shank anchoring configuration enables different slots to be used for different ground conditions. Using the upper rockslot, if the Supreme becomes snagged, the shackle simply slides to the back of the anchor where the traditional tripline was located and the anchor can then be pulled free. The rockslot feature makes the anchor ideal for anchoring in rock or coral conditions. Using the lower sandslot, the Supreme will remain buried, even with major windshifts. The sandslot is ideal for all sand, mud weed and grass conditions. The sandslot is also recommended for anchoring in extreme wind conditions.

The Manson Supreme features include:

• Built from high tensile steel for extreme strength under load.

• Available in hot dipped galvanized and 316 stainless, standard sizes 5lb, 10lb, 15lb, 25lb, 35lb, 45lb, 60lb, 80lb, 100lb, 125lb, 150lb, 175lb, 225lb. Custom sizes up to 1,000 pounds.

• Roll bar to self-right instead of heavily leaded tip--weight can be distributed into the load bearing fluke of the anchor. Increased surface area equates to a much higher holding power.

• Reinforced double skinned laminated toe. Provides an extremely strong forward section of the anchor where the most loading is concentrated.

• Sharpened spear head ensures great penetration into the seabed.
