Kiwi finishes seventh in A-Class Worlds

New Zealand's Murray Philpott has finished in seventh place overall in the World Int A-Class catamaran championships being held in Sweden.
Philpott generally sailed a very consistent series with six top ten places in the 82 boat fleet from 16 nations. A second New Zealand entry Ken Urquart was 67th overall.
Australia's Glenn Ashby dominated the A Class World Championships, being held at Westervik Sail Racing Club.
Being sailed in fine conditions and winds generally around the 10 knot mark, Ashby took control from Race 1, registering perfect scores. He secured the title with a day to spare.
Going into the last day's racing Manuel Calavia from Spain was in second position, followed by Scott Anderson in third and Andrew Landenberger in fourth.
Scott Anderson's best result was a second in Race 7, with his likely drop a 13th in Race 8.
Landenberger's current drop is an 18th in Race 3, with his best result a 3rd in Race 5.

In Detail:
RACE 1
Race 1 saw the fleet get away with only individual recalls and the left side was the way to go, with Anderson (AUS) and Ashby the best starters and best speed from the pin end.
Anderson (AUS) and Ashby tacked slightly under the lay line and extended their lead rounding the top mark, with a good gap on the fleet. The duo maintained the lead over the following bunch and sailed a solid race to finish 1st and 2nd on a predominantly left hand favored track.
Manuel Calavia (ESP) sailed consistently and finished 3rd. Philpot (NZ) to true form bounced back from a bad day yesterday to sail a consistent race with good up wind and downwind speed to finish fourth.
RACE 2
After the left hand paid in race one there were many boats vying for the pin end on a slightly pin end favored line. Ashby fought hard to keep his pin end position but unfortunately a late attack from Andrew Landenburger (AUS) forced Ashby below a position to be able to cross the line as the gun went. Ashby touched the pin end mark and was forced to complete a 360 penalty.
Meanwhile Sjoerd Hoekstra (NED), Anderson (AUS), Calavia (ESP), Philpot(NZ), Calabria (ITA) all got away cleanly and headed left. Ashby was forced to duck through the fleet on port and headed to the right hand side in good pressure and angle. With fantastic boat speed and lay line Ashby tacked in pressure immediately and arrived at the top mark in fourth position, this was Ashby’s best up wind performance of the series!
This race again saw individual recalls and some big names being disqualified. The top four boats in this race (all using the same Ashby Sails) made for some great racing as the difference in speed was nil. Anderson (AUS), Hoekstra (NED) and Calavia (ESP) held Ashby off for the majority of the race but on the last down wind with marginal hull flying conditions and waves gains and losses by missing a wave were critical.
Hoekstra (NED) surrendered the lead after deciding to sail flat after the final jybe on to port and Ashby made his move jybing inside and rolling Calavia(ESP) on a wave. Anderson (AUS) sailed a fantastic down wind and passed Calavia (ESP) just before the finish narrowly missing second by half a boat length to Hoekstra (NED).
Ashby’s unbelievable win in this race gave him a clean sweep of the series with eight wins out of 9 races with one discard which he will use tomorrow.
