The growing sport of flying fishing will get a much-needed boost from the upcoming Fly Fish Baw Baw event in Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort, West Gippsland. The inaugural fishing bonanza, which will run from Nov. 23 to Nov. 25, will attract both seasoned and newbie anglers as they showcase their fly fishing skills on the abundant waters of Victorian rivers.

The inaugural Fly Fish Baw Baw event kicks off on November 23, giving new and experienced recreational anglers an opportunity to learn more about fly fishing.

Parliamentary Secretary for Forestry and Fisheries Gary Blackwood said Victorian rivers and lakes boasted terrific fly fishing opportunities, particularly for brown and rainbow trout.

'This event is a partnership between the Department of Primary Industries, VRFish and the Mt Baw Baw Resort and aims to encourage fly fishing to both new and experienced freshwater anglers,' Mr Blackwood said.

'Recreational fishing is worth $825 million to Victorian each year and creates about 5200 jobs, so events like this are important to help boost the recreational fishing industry even further.'

Fly Fish Baw Baw kicks off on the evening of Friday 23 November with an information session from local fly fishing experts who will discuss the best trout waters in the area and the best flies to use.

'Free maps will be available to guide visitors to access points, including some through private property that’s been specifically granted for the weekend,' Mr Blackwood said.

'The following day, Saturday 24 November, visitors can explore the region’s waters with their fly rod and enjoy the magnificent scenery around the Tanjil and Toorongo rivers and Blue Rock Lake, before an award winning fly fishing movie from the Rise Film Festival is shown Saturday evening.

'To finish off the weekend, a trade fair at the Mt Baw Baw Resort on the Sunday will showcase everything to do with fly fishing.

'Anglers can meet fly fishing guides, see the latest gear from leading fly fishing wholesalers, watch fly tying demonstrations, enjoy family activities for non-fishers or practice their casting skills with experts.'
