Hobie 16 & Hobie Dragoon Europeans champions crowned

by Diana Bogaards on 31 Jul 2007
Detlef Mohr and Karen Wichardt (GER) won the Masters’ title Pierrick Contin/Hobie Cat

On Monday July 30, the race committee of the Hobie 16 & Hobie Dragoon Europeans 2007 cancelled all races for that third day. A wild surf, strong onshore wind and huge waves made safe sailing on the North Sea off the coast of ‘s Gravenzande (NED) impossible.

The weather forecast looks good tough, so the organization expects to continue the competition tomorrow.

Erlier on Sunday, the first Champions of this year’s Hobie 16 & Hobie Dragoon Europeans were crowned. Detlef Mohr and Karen Wichardt from Germany won the Masters’ title. Belinda Zanesco and Jesse Dobie from Australia and representing France, are the new European champs in the Women class.

Despite hours of postponement on Monday, the sailors enjoyed themselves on the ‘s Gravenzande beach. Trainer Brian Phipps gave a workshop on racing tactics and the youngest competitors made nautical paintings. By the clock of 14.00 hours local time, Race Director Rob Hoogstra cancelled all races for the rest of the afternoon.

Tomorrow will be the last day of the youth events Hobie 16 with spinnaker and Hobie Dragoon. Especially in the Hobie 16 with spi, the battle for the medals is close and exciting. Richards/Kersuzan from France are leading by one point.

Butler/Sutcliffe (GBR) will finish the job, as there will be no threat for their European Hobie Dragoon title anymore. The boys easily won every single race so far. Tuesday will also be the start of the qualifying series for the Open Hobie 16 Europeans.
