Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race - Weather briefing wrap up

by G2LHI Media on 4 Apr 2014
SW
At the conclusion of tonight’s race and weather briefing for the Mount Gay 40th Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race, the crew representatives went away happy in anticipation of a fast, exciting race.

All entrants were represented at the briefing and all are in agreement that this will be a very fast race across the Southern Tasman sea to beautiful Lord Howe Island.

Bureau of Meteorology representative Tim Constable suggests that conditions may be stormy at times, but for the most part the yachts are expected to be running with the weather.

Winds at the start could be light and variable but the fleet can expect wind strength up to 25+ knots from the south to south east as they reach the half way mark at the sea mounts.

The bureau representative also suggested that the sea surface temps would be unusually warm, which should take the edge of the southerly chill..

After the slow and frustrating run during last year’s race, returning skippers are rapt to with the prospect of fast, hard and fun race.

Most have done their own analysis of the weather forecast and concur with the BOM predictions, so everyone has left the briefing happy.

The biggest smiles in the room belonged to the crew of the Sydney to Hobart champion Victoire who are looking forward to canted keel reaching and running for almost the entire race.

It’s now looking likely that all of the fleet could be finished by Monday evening, which would be a first for the 40 year old event.

The race starts in Broken Bay 1pm Saturday and regular updates will be posted on the race Facebook page.
