France leads Youth Sailing ISAF Worlds

Two races were completed in all events, apart from the Boys and Girls windsurfer fleets, which completed three at the 35th Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Busan, Korea.
Wind conditions out on the water were more consistent for the sailors - south-westerly 5-10 knots.
Single-handed Dinghy Girls - Laser Radial
Another two races were sailed in the Laser Radial fleet, with Paige RAILEY (USA) consolidating her lead. An OCS mishap for the overnight second placed Stephanie ROSSE (SUI), drops her down significantly from her opening day form. Up into third is Arantza GUMUCIO (CHI), who had a superb second place, followed by a 12th.
In Busan, with the help of the ISAF Athlete Participation Programme, the following sailors are competing in the Laser Radial fleet:
Name Nation Age
Alyson MYERS BAH 15
Tania ZIMMERMAN PER 16
Beth GERTRUDE SEY 16
Phillipa BAER RSA 17
Supported by onsite coach Jim SALTONSTALL (GBR), these sailors will benefit significantly from the daily briefings and post-race analysis.
Whilst sharing his coaching skills with all sailors at the Championship, SALTONSTALL is focusing on the Athlete Participation Programme sailors.
Commenting on her experience so far, Alyson MYERS (BAH) said, 'after the races and dinner, we had a meeting with Jim SALTONSTALL to discuss today’s races. He had filmed us sailing and was giving us helpful advice and tips.
‘Jim is very knowledgeable and has helped us quite a bit. Some of the techniques we were using were outdated and he let us know what else to do. For example, our traveller tension in light air was incorrect. We had been sailing with a loose traveller, but what is needed in light air is a tight traveller. Personally, I am learning a lot and meeting many new people. To me, this has been a great start to the regatta.'

Another bullet for Wataru SAITO/Hiroto YOSHINAGA (JPN) puts them in the lead. Scoring a win in today's opening Race 4, overnight leaders, Tomas SILVA/Francisco GOMES suffered a DSQ in Race 5, which sent them down the leaderboard. When the discard comes into play tomorrow, expect to see the Singaporean duo Wee Chin TEO/Terence KOH move up the board.

Windsurfer Girls - Mistral
Blanca MANCHON (ESP) has moved into the lead, with a fourth and a win result. However, it is extremely close between the top three and as predicted, a close fight is expected for the podium places. With the first discard kicking in after tomorrow's Race 6, expect to a shift in placings, especially for Anne Sophie LE PAGE (FRA) who, with some solid results, will be back on target.

Multihull Open - Hobie 16
The order has not changed for the top four, the only difference being a swap between first and second with Evan WALKER/Kyle LANGFORD (AUS) now holding the lead. The points are incredibly close in the Multihull Open event and it looks as though the defending champions, Tom PHIPPS/Jon COOK (GBR), are going to have a tough battle on their hands over the next few days.

Athens Olympic silver medallist, Joe GLANFIELD, who is coaching the British Hobie and 420 classes at these Championships, commented on the event: 'I have been really impressed by the level of sailing at this regatta, there is so much depth in the classes I have been watching and their racing skills are exceptional for sailors of this age group. There are defiantly some contenders for future Olympic champions on the water here this week.’
On the overall results table, France, the defending nation, is dominating the event and well on the way to again winning the Volvo Nations Trophy.
There are two races scheduled for tomorrow, for all of classes and the first discard comes into play following six races.
