Extreme Sailing Series- Emirates Team NZ in the medal hunt

Emirates Team New Zealand has ended the Extreme Sailing Series Singapore regatta in fourth place.

It was not the finish Dean Barker and crew – Glenn Ashby, Jeremy Lomas, James Dagg and Edwin Delaat – were looking for.

A podium finish was a possibility right up to the first beat of the last race. Alinghi had secured first place overall whatever the outcome of the race, but The Wave, Realstone and Emirates Team New Zealand each had a chance for second and third.

With double points at stake, the plan for the last race was to secure a clean start and then stay out of trouble.

A gear issue disrupted the crew's buildup to the start and then, on the first beat, they were involved in a port-starboard incident with The Wave. The resulting penalty took them to the back of the fleet.

The Wave and Realstone finished well and took second and third places on the leader board.

The next regatta in the Extreme Sailing Series takes place in Oman from March 19-22.
