Extreme Sailing Series - SAP Extreme Sailing Team capsize update

by Sarah Branson on 17 Nov 2013
SAP Extreme Sailing Team capizes in Act 8 of the Extreme Sailing Series Søren Wiegand Kristensen
Quote from SAP Extreme Sailing Team co-skipper Rasmus Kostner following the dramatic capsize during racing this
afternoon…

'We had a pretty good downwind where we saw some breeze from behind, we jibed into it and then came in from a good angle into the gate - we put the bow in and then the wind just took us at the wrong angle and we capsized. It was pretty full on, there were just a couple of seconds and then we realised we were going over!

Things happened very quick from there and i think everyone handled the situation very well, everybody was safe. Pete took a hit, we got the guest off in the best way and I think everybody kept really calm so it ended up fine but you can be quite worried when you're in that situation that someone could be hurt. Everybody's ok and the whole team did a great job to have the boat back on shore now and we can assess all the damage. It was really quick, three hours from the capsize to being in here with the boat, it's a pretty good job. That's just how it is, we push hard and that was too much, we got caught in a puff and we couldn't handle it.

We haven't made the final plan about tomorrow yet, we just need to see what is broken to see if we can go racing tomorrow. We need to look at the scoreboard and if we have a chance, or if it make sense for us to race then we'll try and get the boat on the racecourse - there's nowhere else we'd rather be than there! We'll see if Pete is ready to race, we'll see if we have the equipment to race tomorrow and we might have a long night ahead of us!'

To follow the team and watch all the action, the Extreme Sailing Series live streaming will be available at the following times daily throughout the week, go to Extreme Sailing Series: Sunday 17th November: 1530-1630 BRST / 1730-1830 GMT
