Bundock and Forbes continue their European assault

by Simone Green, Yachting Australia on 12 Mar 2004
Further consistent results by Tornado World Champions, Darren Bundock (AIS/NSWIS) and John Forbes (AIS/NSWIS) on day three of competition, move the pair into outright first place as they battle for the 6th Mats Nyberg Trophy, in Spain.

Sailors were treated to excellent sea and wind conditions, the day beginning with 8-9 knot winds and gradually increasing to 13-17 knots, in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The Aussie pair took advantage of the conditions, increasing the gap between them and French crew, Oliver Backes and Laurent Voiron (who yesterday were on equal points) to 14 points.

World number one crew, Mitch Booth and Herbert Dercksen (NED) move into second place, looking to edge closer to the Aussie’s as the fleet move into the final two days of competition.

Coach, Mike Fletcher, reported from Spain,
'Darren and John are producing consistent results. A great effort by the pair, who are sailing in their first regatta together since September 2003.'

A rest day tomorrow, will be followed by two scheduled races on Saturday and Sunday.

6th Mats Nyberg Trophy Results – Day Three
1. Darren Bundock/John Forbes (AUS) (14,1,2,4,2,4) 13pts

2. Mitch Booth/Herbie Dercksen (NED) (10,3,4,OCS,4,2,) 23pts

3. Olivier Backes/Laurent Voiron (FRA) (1,2,10,8,13,6) 27pts

**Please note – The Mats Nyberg Trophy is held in conjunction with the Tornado European Championship. Crews from countries outside Europe can not compete for the European title.
