Belmont 16ft Sailing Club Championship

by Luke Hughes on 20 Oct 2003
Trojan Fibreglass, skippered by John Boyd, emerged victorious in the Heat 1 of the Belmont 16ft Skiff Club Championship sailed on Belmont Bay on Sunday. Boyd was aided by brother Gary, recently returned from sailing overseas in a bid for Olympic selection and long term forwardhand, Michael Jackson.

The race got under way with a clean start in a fresh north easterly breeze, providing sailors with a true test of their abilities. In a race of fluctuating fortunes, the lead changed several times.

Going in to the final lap it was a race between three with Boyd trailing Sails at the 16s and Luxury Yacht Cruises, skippered by Ben Bruniges and Greg Searant respectively.

However, when it counted, Boyd stole the show to take the early lead in the championship with Luxury Yacht Cruises coming in second and Tooheys extra Dry, skippered by Scott Ellis coming in third with Bruniges slipping in the final stages.
