ABN Amro takes Britannia Cup

No records were broken today when Class 0 contested the Britannia Cup with a race around the Isle of Wight, but Mike (Moose) Sanderson and his Volvo Ocean Race winning boat ABN Amro crossed the finishing line 8 minutes behind ICAP Maximus, but beat her on corrected time by 26 minutes to collect the trophy.

Charles St Clair-Brown steered the biggest boat in Skandia Cowes Week, ICAP Maximus around the Island in 4 hours, 58 minute, 8 seconds, well outside the monohull record of 4 hours, 8 minutes and 55 seconds.

ICAP Maximus led from the early stages of the race, but with ABN Amro always a threat.

In the end, the huge New Zealand super maxi dropped to third place on handicap, with Benny Kelly’s Panthera taking second place.

Two boats, Magic Glove and Danebury, sailed all the way around the Island, but found they’d been disqualified for starting prematurely.

Pindar AlphaGraphics chose not to race as they sailed with corporate guests who wished to watch the racing.
