HSBC COASTAL CLASSIC INTRODUCES IRC DIVISION

The HSBC Coastal Classic™ is pleased to announce that it will be one of the first major coastal races in the country to add a division for those racing under IRC. Since the IRC rating system was introduced to New Zealand, an encouraging number of boat owners have had their boats measured, and the NZMYC is proud to support this initiative which will in turn improve the quality of the race fleet and broaden opportunities for New Zealand boats racing internationally. Seven boats are required for a division, and subsidies are available for those wishing to obtain their first IRC certificate – contact Yachting NZ for more information www.yachtingnz.org.nz.

A LOOK AT COASTALS PAST

In 1987 the 45 foot catamaran Afterburner slashed the race record by almost five hours when it won the Auckland to Russell race in 12 hours and 39 minutes. Afterburner, designed by Malcolm Tennant, averaged 13 knots for long stages of the race and hit over 20 knots. Conditions were north-north east, approx 15 knots, with flat seas and twelve boats broke the race record that year.

SPONSOR PROFILE: DIRTY DOG

Dirty Dog Sunglasses are a strategic asset for any competitive sailor. Select from a range of stylish frames and water-specific features such as: a ‘water escape’ lens design that ensures water coming in, also flows out, and a hydrophobic lens coating that helps water to bead away, instead of smearing. Polarised lenses assist with spotting wind shifts and the frames are strong, yet extremely lightweight, designed to fit snugly around your face, providing optimum comfort and maximum protection from glare, all day.

SPONSOR PROFILE: TRADE-A-BOAT

Trade-A-Boat is a big supporter of the HSBC Coastal Classic. As official media partner of the Great Race, Trade-A-Boat is helping to get word out to tens of thousands of boating readers every month. Trade-A-Boat is widely regarded not only because of its ‘for sale’ listings but for its dynamic and very readable magazine section, profiling yachting, cruising and powerboating. Trade-A-Boat also operates a website where you can search listings from thousands of boats for sale in New Zealand. Check out future issues of Trade-A-Boat for HSBC Coastal Classic stories, photos and commentary.

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY

To start planning. Cat 3 is compulsory for all HSBC Coastal Classic entrants, and so is PHRF for keelboats. Unless you have made major modifications to your boat, PHRF renews annually, and Cat 3 comes around every three years. Penalty fees for late applications have also been increased this year. You could leave renewal until the last minute… or take care of it over winter. www.yachtingnz.org.nz
