12' skiff class looking for recruits

by Brett Phillips on 1 Sep 2011

Sailing season is fast approaching, and the 12ft class is looking for experienced sailors to join the fleet.

The 12ft skiff class is a fantastic class with its unique, exciting and above all, fun racing, catering to all levels. Ages of participants run from teenagers to grandfathers and the class offers a level of camaraderie, which is the envy of many.

Club racing is strong with Lane Cove boasting 15 skiffs, Woollahra 10 skiffs and Abbotsford 2 skiffs. State titles are well run events, with all clubs hosting heats. The Nationals, include boats from Queensland. The highlight of our season, is the international competition between Australia and New Zealand. The 2011 Interdominon regatta was a huge success, with 34 skiffs from NSW, QLD and New Zealand enjoying the racing and the off water hospitality.

With recent launchings of brand new boats, there are opportunities for people to join the class. There are a number of second hand boats available and the 12’ association is happy to introduce potential crews and skippers, some ready for a season of learning the ropes, some ready to compete at the pointy end of the fleet!

There will be plenty of assistance offered to those new to the class, to learn the thrills of racing, what at times, can be likened to the best rollercoaster ride you will ever experience.
