The recently selected Governor’s Cup teams have been notified that their applications have been accepted for Balboa Yacht Club’s 46th annual Governor’s Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship which will take place July 18 to 22, 2012.
The 2011 Governor’s Cup winning team from San Diego Yacht Club will return this year to challenge other returning competitors from Australia, New Zealand and California.
Racing will be held in the afternoons from Wednesday through Sunday, in the ocean near the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California.
The round robin format for the event provides spectators with continuous competition as each race features only two boats with each team racing against every other team at least once. The talented racers will demonstrate a variety of tactics and skills as they race around buoys. It is especially exciting to watch when they round the weather mark, with colorful spinnakers flying.
On the water International Umpires will provide instant response to protests and infractions.
Selected Teams:
Balboa Yacht Club, Corona del Mar, CA - Ryan Davidson
Chicago Yacht Club, Chicago, IL - Will Holz
Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Sydney, Australia - Ashlen Rooklyn
Göteborgs Kungliga Segel Sällskap, Goteborg, Sweden - Jakob Klitte

New to the Gov Cup is Göteborg Kungliga Segelsälskap, from Goteborg, Sweden. Their team has been racing all over Europe in a variety of boats, but this will be their first experience in Gov Cup 21’s. The remaining teams represent Yacht Clubs that have participated one or more times during the 46 year history of the Governor’s Cup.
Nevin Snow, the skipper of the 2011 winning team from San Diego Yacht Club and the youngest ever winner of the Cup, will return to race again together with his 2011 crew since all are still eligible. Nevin will try to become the eighth two-time winner in Cup history. The third and fourth place teams, both from New Zealand, will also be led by returning skippers.

Behind every great sporting event like Governor’s Cup are great sponsors. Without their generous support, the event would not be possible. This year there are many returning sponsors. The presenting sponsor is Sterling BMW. In addition, Newport Balboa Sailing and Seamanship Association (NBSSA), owner and manager of the Governor’s Cup 21 sailboat racing fleet, and CR&R, a leading Southern California waste and recycling company, will provide extensive support.
A new category of sponsorship is Team Underwriters, which includes Balboa Boat Rentals, Duffy Boats, Ayres Hotel & Suites, Hirsch Pipe & Supply Co., Inc. and David and Deborah Lake.
