16- JUN1011 - 2012 AUS Mid-Winter Youth Championships David Price
The 2012 Australian Mid-Winter Youth Championships kicked off yesterday in pristine conditions on Waterloo Bay, Brisbane (Queensland).
Although the breeze was fluctuating a little between 8-15kts from the south-east, the sun was doing its best to warm up a rather cold week and the 230 boat combined fleet were all smiles returning from the practice race on day one of the regatta.
The 29ers class fleet, well represented at the regatta with eighteen teams including two from New Zealand raced on the Bravo Course along with the 420s, Laser Radials and 4.7s, and the Bic Technos just south of Green Island.
With a clear start the fleet completed the two lap race within 40mins, all returning to shore under spinnaker without any dramas.
The leaders of the practice race were all from Yachting NSW’s Youth Sailing Team:
1. AUS 1407 Crunchie - Harry Price and Nathan Edwards
2. 1933 Gnarly - Brooke Smith and Corey Hamilton
3. AUS 1941 Michael Koerner and Nathan Judges
Race 1 gets underway at 1130hrs today with a predicted 15kts sou’easter which should have all the tails waging in the boat park this morning.
