Laser Radial Youth World Championship 2012.
The final day of racing for the sailors from 19 nations was held at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on Moreton Bay in Brisbane, Queensland Australia today.
Hermann Tomasgaard from Norway won the Boys Under 19 World title on a count back from New Zealand’s Andrew McKenzie, both finished on 24 points. Mitchell Kiss (USA) was third on 27 points.
The top spot in the under 17 Boys went to Russia’s Maxim Nikolaev on 33 points. He placed fourth overall. Second was Benoit Lagneux (SUI) on 61 points followed by Ong Jevyn Jingrui from Singapore on 67 points.

The 2011 Under 17 Laser Radial World Champion Maxime Jonker (NED) now 18, won the 2012 Under 19 title. Australian Madison Kennedy took second place finishing on 32 points, while Britain’s Georgina Povall was third on 38 points.
In the Under 17 Girls, Australians Anna Philip and Louise Evans took the top two spots with Philip placed fifth overall on 43 points and Evans 11th overall on 66 points. Third place went to USA’s Lindsey Baab on 74 points.
In the Girls fleet Jonkers really stepped up to the plate and so did Australia’s Madeline Kennedy.
For Kennedy the last day was a big learning curve. As she packed her Laser away on the green lawns at RQYS this afternoon she said ‘I had an awesome start at the pin, I crossed the fleet and then instead of consolidating, kept going right, that turned out to be a major mistake. The wind went to left and I was deep at the top mark. I climbed back to ninth.
‘In the second race I was buried at the start and struggled and that cost me any chance I had to win the world title.
‘Then it glassed out for hours. With a little more breeze the Race Committee tried for a start for us girls just before the 3pm cut off.
'But the tide pushed a lot of the boats over and with time our enemy, it was all over.
‘I came second in the Worlds, I am very pleased. Of course to win the World title would have been wonderful but really Maxime Jonkers sailed brilliantly and she deserves the win.
‘I just want to say thanks to Adrian Finglas at the Queensland Academy of Sport and the other coaches, Ken Hurling and Ben Callard, the sponsors, event organisers, all the volunteers and especially Dad and Mum.'
(Dad BTW has a Laser Radial Master World title under his belt and he won bronze at this venue in the Master Worlds a few months ago, so its a family sport.)
‘For me OAMPS start tomorrow, then later in the year Sail Down Under and Nationals.'
Principal Race officer Kevin Wilson was philosophical when he came ashore
‘We tried to get a third race in , some pressure had come in about 14:30 and we tried to set up a race track but we just ran out of time with a 15:00 cut off.
‘We attempted a start for the girls just before the deadline but the current was pushing them, there were a lot of boats over early and we had a general recall.
‘Overall the sailors are all happy and they all appreciate the effort that the race committee put in to try to get fair racing away.
‘It was fair racing so that was the good part about it. It would have been nice to get more races in but unfortunately the pressure system just hasn’t allowed the breeze to come through.
‘Now we move forwards to OAMPS Queensland Youth Sailing Week and the Laser Radial Mens World Championships which start on the 10th and run to 17th July.’
