Heron and Mirror Open at Yeadon SC

by Hon. Scribe on 27 Jun 2012
Yeadon Sailing Club
The Heron and Mirror Open took place on Sunday, 17th June at Yeadon Sailing Club. It was a dull day with south-west winds (occasionally) 2-3, gusting four.

In race one, Dennis Beard and Tony Dufton got off to a good and very competitive start, until eventually our first mark proved too elusive even for the old Veteran, who surrendered his lead with regret. David Hinks, with a new crew, and the ubiquitous Philip Lund (he is brave to keep coming here year after year) fought valiantly against the bewildering conditions, and Joe and Harriet Lee kept a steady presence in the middle of the fleet.

In race two, minutes before the start, Philip decided to carry out waterborne repairs to his running rigging, but the wind got him, and the fleet had to set off without him, leaving our lifeboat to pull him out of the mud. Thank you for the entertainment, Philip.

David, not wishing to emulate Philip, wisely did not start, leaving the lone Mirror to pursue the two Herons. This time, in spite of the valiant efforts of Tony, Dennis managed (just) to keep a very narrow lead, and finally triumphed.

In race three, the wind now excelled itself, and helms were tested to distraction (or should that be 'destruction'?). Philip came back for more punishment, which he duly received, the Mirror gave a new meaning to 'sailing by the Lee(s)', and the two hotshots gave us another absolutely thrilling display of resolution and 'never say die'. The younger man deserved his narrow victory. Pity they’re both a bit old for the Olympics……………
