Rowing New Zealand has revitalised the New Zealand Rowing Foundation which was established following the 1978 World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro, with the primary objective to assist in the promotion, fostering and encouragement of the sport within New Zealand.
The dividends received over the years having been advanced primarily to assist junior rowing.
Over the last three years the principal sum has been used as leverage funding for three projects, all being critical to the sport:
• Gallagher High Performance Centre building at Karapiro
• an underwrite facility for the new finish tower at Karapiro
• loan support finance for the 2010 World Championships.
The Executive decided to re-launch the Foundation to increase this capital sum and thereby assist the sport from the income derived in key development and special project areas.
Already a number of generous benefactors within the rowing community have committed to become members.
This generosity will assist greatly in providing the necessary catalyst for the Foundation officially re-launched in May, with a fantastic start to the donor recruitment campaign, ‘this impetus to revitalise the Foundation is absolutely necessary to assist the sport to continue its high achievements’.
Funding for New Zealand's Elite team is fully covered through the high performance funding advanced by Sport NZ. It is a different story for our Under 23 and Junior athletes as they are largely self-funded and this places a high financial burden on athletes and parents.
Rowing has again set the standard with another successfully run World Championships at Lake Karapiro and results from the 2011 World Championships at Bled with nine medals, 2nd top nation in Olympic category events and 11 crews qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
While the Foundation’s register and administrative activities are now based at the Rowing New Zealand office, the Foundation activities remain under the direct control of the Executive.
